Oral: trust vs. mistrust
Anal/Urethral: autonomy vs. shame/doubt
Phallic: initiative vs. guilt
Latency: industry vs. inferiority
Genital:
>identity vs. confusion/diffusion (puberty)
>intimacy vs. isolation (20-30 yrs old, marriage/intimate)
>generativity vs. stagnation (3-50 yrs old, parenting or be self absorbed)
>integrity vs. despair (old age, fulfilled in life or lots of regrets)
It is a polarity, two extremes, the positive and the negative. We keep talking how we need homeostasis or balance during a crisis. Being overgratified can lead to fixation while as being deprived can lead to needs. We need to overcome crisis or it will lead to a problem that can be long term.
How does our quality of relationship affect us?
Oral: infant-mother
Anal: toilet training, babyhood-caregiver
Phallic: early childhood, 3 yr old girl-boy are capable of exploring the world, they can think and ask lots of questions but they can also be punished and that's where the formation of the superego comes in (guilt)
Latency: late childhood, experimentation
Genital: puberty, adolescence
In the womb, everything was provided for in the umbilical cord, didn't need to breath or else it would drown in the womb as well as the condition was constant.
Infancy most traumatic because the first two weeks there are radical adjusments to environment around him. The temperature, radical changes around him made the infant very vulnerable.
Ego inflation is when the infant can trust the mother, and then can trust the world. Paranoia is an all about me personality, delusions of grandure = Jesus Christ, messianic complex. Physiological need, provide for the child. When a child cries it means it needs to be fed. It is considered over gratification if the child is fed in less than 5 seconds. By delayed gratification, the child can learn that he is a separate entity from the world that it's not all about him and will have ego deflation.
Erikson had a term oral pessimism, people who had a pessimistic view of the world and of one's self. There is also oral sadistic - who is against the world and one's self.
